The purpose of a Content Management System (CMS) is to provide website owners with a tool that will allow them to be in full control of their website and update it when ever required from any computer connected to the Internet (or intranet). By using a CMS, site owners just need to enter their user name and password in the login page of the CMS and proceed with easy to use guidelines. A full site administration page loads showing site statistics and all the tools available to manage the site. The site manager can from this interface control everything available on the site as well as the users allowed to edit and co-operate in the content of the site.
Briefly, a CMS functions as follows:

  • After the user has logged in successfully, they will be presented with a list of the sections they have permission to edit.
  • When the user enters a specific section in the CMS, the user will be presented with a list of the records in that section, or if applicable, a facility to search for the relevant record.
  • The facility to edit the record(s) displayed, in the step above, will be created. Furthermore, the facility to delete and add new records will also be created.
  • Where applicable, users will be able to upload additional files to attach to the content being supplied to the system. These can take the form of both pictures and non-graphical data.
  • A facility is available so that the user can upload content to the site, but remove it from public use, until required.
